Craftsman Charm on Thorne
Susan Monahan and her husband Mark Brucks thoughtfully restored this early Craftsman style home on Thorne Street in Walla Walla. The home, built in 1909, boasts 5,400 square feet- all of which is original to the home.
Susan and Mark purchased the home 7 years ago and completed the remodel 3.5 years ago. The remodel included shifting a few walls to expand the kitchen, adding a master bathroom, painting, updating the tiling the bathrooms, and removing quite a bit of 70's style decor. The results were well worth the wait. When you walk through the front door the modern elements and original details blend into a cohesive, natural space that mirrors its owners effortlessly.
During the remodel Susan and Mark chose to keep the original features, such as the gorgeous vertical grain fir floors and woodwork, the doors throughout the home, the leaded glass built in in the dining room, and all of the radiators with interesting details. The home now has forced air throughout but the radiators add charm and heritage.
This radiator features a cherub amid the scroll work
The kitchen is almost completely new with a granite island, window seat overlooking the backyard, cabinet faced appliances for a seamless look, apron front sink, and a subway tile backsplash.
Just off the kitchen is the pantry that Susan designed to look like it was original to the home and painted a fun blue to liven up the space.
The master bath is a new addition, built where a screened in porch used to be, that features a gorgeous dropped marble counter top, subway tiled soaking tub, and tiled floors. Susan collects arts and crafts pottery and styled the master bathroom after the tile hanging above the tub (shown below).
The bedrooms are incredibly spacious and frequently play host to Chamber and Symphony musicians. The furnishings that the couple have collected throughout their lives blend seamlessly with the style of the house. Susan said that she has always envisioned herself owning a Craftsman style home and was drawn to this one specifically because of the neighborhood and creek through the front yard.
The house on Thorne sits on an acre of land and features water-saving landscaping in the front yard and a massive garden that is generously shared with surrounding neighbors.

Kirkman House
The Kirkman House has been a fixture in Walla Walla since 1880 and is a Victorian style mansion originally built by the Kirkman family. It currently operates as a museum showcasing Kirkman family items, items from the Victorian period, and rotating themed displays.
The Kirkman House is 6,000 square feet of intricate details and impressive design. An interesting feature of the Kirkman House is the floating staircase. This staircase is made without supports underneath. This was a feat of engineering design when it was created. The entire staircase was made-to-order for the Kirkman family on the eat coast and was shipped around South America and brought from the west coast to Walla Walla.
Another feature of the museum is the marble wall in the foyer. At the time the home was built having a wall that emulated marble but was not actually marble was considered very fashionable and cost far more than real marble. The Kirkman family hired an artist to paint the walls so that they looked like marble. The wall you can see today is a restoration of the original work done by an artist in Pendleton.
If you haven't been to the Kirkman House in a while consider going. The current rotating exhibit features the "little black dress" and its evolution through the ages. Take a walk down memory lane and appreciate dresses from the late 19th century through today in a variety of silhouettes, styles and fabrics along with the furnishings and memorabilia of the family.
The Kirkman House is located at 214 N. Colville St. in Walla Walla. For more information about the museum and upcoming events please visit http://www.kirkmanhousemuseum.org/.
